Module 6: Sychronized Interactions in the Virtual Classroom

Sychronized Interactions in the Virtual Classroom

Synchronized classrooms can help with educational reform.  The parents want a great education for their children.  Some see their children falling behind in school.  Some parents see their children attending unsafe schools and feel as though they have no alternative.  I believe the future that many have talked about has arrived.  Five years from now, every parent will be aware of the choices they have for their child’s education.   “With quality and increased access as the drivers of new online delivery models, schools can begin to ensure that every student, regardless of their geography, income level or background, has access to the very best education the 21st century has to offer.” ~ Holstead

** I first videotaped my entire speech and reseach but found since I am having issues with my lips mathcin my voice, it looked rally bad. I also could not record in powerpoint because of extreme static in the background that could not be fixed.   I decided to switch over to using SMART video recorder to record the screen.  Just had computer reimaged 4 times and a new hard drive put in and it is not good on my end.  These were the best resources I could use.

  1. Hi Lori,
You did a nice job incorporating the research. Much of what the teachers in the video described sounds like the flipped classroom approach, which is very popular in the trade literature right now. Two comments I have for you are (1) that the video is quite long, , and I was not sure what speaker you were introducing with it.

  2. Martha,

I wanted to have a good introduction so that is why I have the video which makes it a much longer presentation. I tried to shorten it, but maybe I should have shortened it more. I was guilding anticipation when I announced Dr. Trombetta a little bit at the beginning but maybe should have put more emphasis on that. Thanks for the comments.

  3. Lori,

Your video was very informative. The research you conducted on the topic was very strong. I think it would have been more engaging if your voice overlay was with moving video instead of still pictures. My favorite part was the video you shot of the cyber school teachers. I liked seeing the "behind the scenes" of a cyber school. Maybe time could have been shaved with the intro video or closing video. Your editing was great! This was my first video project, so I felt my editing was a bit choppy.

  4. Hi Lori,

I sincerely appreciate all the work you put into your video. I especially liked the video clips from the teachers you interviewed about their use of synchronized interactions in their teaching, and all the research you included. Do you work with the teachers you interviewed? While watching your video, I was wondering when you were going to introduce the guest speaker, and why you waited until the last 50 seconds to formally introduce Dr. Trombetta, even though you did mention his name when you talked to the three teachers.

How did you like using the SMART Video Recorder? I never thought about using that tool in this way. I noticed your video was 14:50. I found I had to eliminate more video clips than I had planned, in order to keep my video between the five and six minute criteria. Best wishes to you as you continue your scholarly doctoral journey.

    Sincerely,
    LeAnn

    1. LeAnn,

Yes I work with the teachers in the video. I actually trained two of them. You are correct,I should have mentioned him more in the beginning also. I like using the SMART recorder. I had to do it a couple times because I forgot you see everything so zi kept showing my mouse moving around.

  5. Lori,
Just by viewing your video I see a lot of things I could have added or done differently with mine. It is definitely engaging and you kept my attention. The volume control is great and so is the background music. Is this your first time creating a video? Because it was the first time for me and I can tell a big difference between our two videos. I guess Shar's video is true. I could have used a mentor guiding me through this course I might have been a bit more successful, but back to your video. I especially liked the pictures of the children.

    1. I have just started to creating videos since I started this program. I want to learn to use the programs in a much better way. I want to know more about transitions and also how to have someone continue talking while I insert another image on the screen. I guess it is all trial and error.

  6. Hi Lori,

What an opening! I was hooked and then I got disinterested when the next minutes were just stills. I admit that I stopped watching after five and a half minutes.

However, in reading the other comments on your video, I was encouraged to continue watching. I do really like the video commentary from the synchronized teachers, are these your coworkers? I think showing video of the students in the classroom (or just moving images of the interface itself )so we can get further feel for the environment would have been more effective when presenting the research rather than quote and picture. Could you have recorded your online classroom?

    Cheers - Shar!

    1. Shar,
My computer is pretty messed up right now so I could not use anything but still pictures with the SMART recorder. I actually did my entire presentation with a video recording but my lips did not match my words and it looked really bad. I had to switch and it was my only choice. Powerpoint no longer has the recorder in it either. It was frustrating because I know I could have done better if my computer was better. Those are a few of my co-workers. I also recorded my class online but for some reason it does not pick up the voice of the students. It only has my voice which made it look really bad. I think this has to do with both the students and I using headsets in class. I tried to put a couple students in the video working at their computer. I should post some of the videos to show the problems that I did not think was good to use in the final video.

    2. Hi Lori,
I find that recording in the classroom is one of themost difficult things to do. It is easy to get the teacher's voice, but you can never hear the students. Even some professionally produced classroom videos I have seen have this problem--you cannot hear the kids. I wonder if there is a non-intrusive way to solve this problem, as I I believe classroom videos are a great source for professional development.

  7. Lori,

I believe this is one of the best presentations that I have ever seen on virtual classroom technologies. The part that I got the most out of is the target market for this innovation. In today's society, there are many single parents that have children with illnesses or work shifts that are unaccomendating to tradittional school schedules. You illustrated your points very well throughout the entire presentation.

I honestly do not see anything that could have been done better. Thank you for the learning experience and I wish you well throughout your academic future.

  8. Lori,

Your video was captivating! I liked the beginning and found myself really engaged by your production and music. I know that my video was too long, but near the end found myself thinking yours could have been just a tad shorter. I missed the introduction of the speaker, however I will say Kudos to you for a really engaging and authentic project.
